UTAS Medicine

The adventures and misadventures of two fresh-faced medical students in the far, far south.

Study

Hi all,

Just a quick update. I’ve started SWOTVAC study, focussing on neoplasia first because that’s my rustiest topic.

The exams are as follows:

Theme 1: 2 hours, 11th June
Themes 2-4: 2 hours, 15th June
Theme 1 Practical: 30mins, 19th June
Objective Structured Clinical Examination: 5mins, 21st June

I have no idea how they’re going to fit all the material we have covered in Theme 1 into a two-hour exam. Either it’s going to be impossible to finish or they’re severely truncating it which makes me tempted to skip a few topics in my study (DANGEROUS). The OSCE is pretty interesting, it shouldn’t be too difficult this semester, we just have to successfully open an interview and establish a rapport with a patient, and in doing so, get the examiner to tick off certain criteria boxes. Pretty straightforward, but it is easy to stuff up if you’re nervous so we’ll see how it goes.

    Hey Hayden!
This is Zainy from pagingdr forum :P I’ve just started reading your blog - the story of how you came to realise that medicine was the path for you and how you actually got in is a beautiful one!
After I sat the GAMSAT this year I was sure I’d failed so I signed up to do the UMAT with the intention of applying to UTAS. As it turned out, I passed the GAMSAT and so I’ve just applied for grad medicine at Notre Dame, ANU and USyd; but since I’ve already paid for the UMAT I figured I’d do it and apply for UTAS anyway, just in case…
Keep up the good job with your blog (and your studies of course!). I might email you with some questions about med @ UTAS if I get through the UMAT!!
    Cheerio,
    Zainy

    Hey Zainy!

That’s great about the GAMSAT, I hope it’s good enough! And keeping your options open is the best thing, so I’m really glad you’re still doing the UMAT anyway, just in case.

Yep email me any time, also if you want undergraduate med advice, try http://www.medstudentsonline.com as well as the Paging Dr forum.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Hayden.
