Teaching Piano

Tomorrow I’ll start teaching piano.

I taught piano for a brief 2 months when I was 18, doing year 13.  It wasn’t very encouraging.  My two students left afterwards.  One of them stopped learning because they didn’t want to do piano anymore, the other’s parents thought I was just too young.

I wonder how I’ll go this time?  Will the years and maturity count for anything?  (Query: “maturity”)  Will the time spend away from the keyboard have dried up my knowledge?  I tried teaching Gloris a few times and I didn’t ever feel out of things to say, so that’s a good sign.

I have decided to push them into performing.  The Adelaide Eisteddfods are coming up, and I recently realised that there is nothing quite like preparing for performances to get me to put in the practice time, both when I was younger, and now.  I’ve entered myself into a few sections this year, in the snide knowledge that I am too stingy to waste the money I have paid, and that it will be good for me to get back into competition again.   It also sets a good example for my students, who I need to be role model for.

Also, whoever is reading this and is in Adelaide, I have two concerts coming up, one in the Flinders St Baptist Church, on June 30th, and another on July 22nd at 1pm at the Pilgrim Church (on Flinders St also).  I’ll be playing a program of Chopin and Liszt, if things go to plan.

All this piano is worrisome.  Medicine is a big draw on time… music is also a big draw on time… so… music therapy?
