Sitting on Ventrilo, playing a little DotA…
What has been one of the big surprises for me this year in medicine is the community of people who play the infamous DotA. For those that don’t know, DotA is a very popular (possibly even the most popular) variant of Warcraft 3. Being introduced to the game in Lincoln College near the middle of this year, I have found that a significant proportion of medical students (usually male, but I do know of one girl from college) have played this game before and it is almost universal that the asian males are very skilled at it. Um, that is, except for me and birdman. No offence intended birdman. I suck too.
Basically the game is played in two teams of five players each. Each player controls one “hero” which has special abilities. Each team also has a base which spawns computer controlled units and several peripheral towers. The aim of the game is to destroy the peripheral towers which will allow destruction of the base.
As unpalatable as it sounds the game is quite popular and even in swotvac I have heard of people logging on and playing with their friends. Yes, this swotvac where there is an exam tomorrow and I am trying to prepare for it but instead of procrastinating by playing on DotA I am blogging this.
What now?
Well…
(written several days later):
birdman - i see you have decided to use my account to play on battle.net - which is fine by me
- perhaps it would be nice to play on there with you sometime.
I have played a few games on battle.net and it is quite apparent that I suck. 0/8 is not a good score. on the other hand, 22/4 is.
Anyway enough of this nerdy stuff. Holidays are not for DotA. Holidays are for catching up with friends and family and really doing the things you want to do. *shakes self back into sanity*

thanks Tony… you have identified me as the “nerd who plays DotA in the holidays” :’(
by the way how can we play together if i have ur cd-key….
i should get my friend’s cd-key again…. sigh
yar we should go hamachi sometime. haha i actually find playing against computers is more fun (than battlenet, not against friends) becos i can win sometimes
Hey hey, I suck too!!
Although I did win a game with a ratio of 0/15 or something =P
Good times ^^
