[i feel like blogging but don’t have the time]
ahem. i’ll write this later. just leaving it here as a little reminder to myself.
So urm anyways……… because i’m too lazy to rename this post or delete any of the above…
Oh wow. Now i have an excuse to actually post something, it’s hardly a blog tho?
Basically, after my interviews for medicine entry at Adelaide and Monash (which are coming up fairly soon for this year’s applicants) I wrote down as many of the questions that they asked that I could remember, just in case anyone wanted them in the future. And it seems they do/will, so here they are:
Monash
Why do you want to do medicine?
Any work experience in medical area to see what a doctor actually does?
Do you know of any [personal] problems doctors have?
A doctor working in a rural setting will probably know their patients personally? Do you think this is a good or bad thing?
Do you know a doctor whom you particularly admire? Why?
Describe a rewarding teamwork experience that you were apart of.
How was it rewarding?
Have you been apart of a team where the outcome was not positive?
How would you resolve a conflict between friends wanting to see different movies?
Do you think it is more important for a doctor to be a member of a team or a leader of a team?
How do you comfort a stressed person?
How, as a doctor, would you deal with a nurse on the phone who has made a mistake?
Underage drinking:
What is the article suggesting?
Were you aware of underage drinking at your school?
How prevalent was it?
Do you think students were influenced by advertising?
Do you think underage drinking is a natural behaviour or a serious problem?
Do you think parents should be responsible for underage drinking? What about if someone’s property got broken, should parents have to pay?
Do you think adolescents are aware of the consequences of alcohol abuse?
Explain, to a person who knows no chemistry, how where an element is positioned in the Periodic Table gives it similar properties to other elements in the Table.
Story about Satomi, the gymnast:
What do you think are the main issues in this story?
Why do you think Satomi is so upset?
Do you think Satomi will be able to compete again?
Do you know of any problems facing sportspeople in the real world?
Do you think Satomi was too focused on gymnastics?
Are there any dangers to being too focused on one thing?
What do you think of Satomi’s reaction to her father?
Anything that you would like to add?
Any questions?
Adelaide
Scenario 1: A patient has abnormal test results, with two possible diagnoses. The patient may have a life-threatening illness, which if not treated will result in their death. However, they may also have a minor illness. If the treatment for the life-threatening illness is given to a patient with the minor illness, they will become very ill. What should you do?
Summarise the situation.
What course of action would you take?
You have given the patient all this information [that you described], and they decide to go ahead with the treatment. A month later the patient dies, as a result of the treatment. They actually had the minor illness.
How would you feel for the family of the patient?
How would you yourself feel?
Was it really a “mistake”?
Can you tell us how and when you became interested in doing medicine?
How did your parents react when you told them you wanted to do medicine?
Do you know of any downsides to being a doctor?
Do you know any doctors [personally]?
Scenario 2: A very successful friend in your study group has been getting lower marks, their work is becoming sloppy and they have stopped coming to group study sessions. You talk to them about this, and they say that the work is too hard. They feel that life is not worth living and that it should end soon. How would you react? What would you do?
Your friend has started to shut themselves off from other people, and refuses to see a counsellor/psychologist… What would you do?
Have you ever been in a similar situation yourself, where you’ve had to help someone, or seek help from them?
What sort of things do you discuss with your current friends?
Can you tell us everything you know about the Adelaide Uni medicine course?
What do you understand by the term “student-centred learning”?
Have you done any of this type of learning?
Scenario 3: You are a medicine student and it is just before your final exams. You have, up until now, been regularly taking a seriously ill friend to their doctor’s appointments, but you have planned to study when one of these appointments is scheduled. Your friend has come to expect your support in taking them to these appointments. What should you do?
Have you ever been in a situation like this before, where there are 2 conflicting interests?
Is there anything you would like to ask about medicine at Adelaide uni?
Is there anything that we haven’t discussed that you would like to add?
What sort of other non-academic activities have you done?
The scenarios (and the questions, for that matter) aren’t exact… and remember that it is very possible that they have changed the interviews a lot since last year. But some questions - like the obvious “Why do you want to do medicine?” - will probably always be there >.<
Good luck

That’s interesting. It doesn’t sound like they’ve changed the style of the questions too much in the last 6 years, although the potentially loaded questions regarding parental thoughts about the job and if you know any doctors personally do seem more recent.

Good stuff. I blanked out when I left. Felt like I was in there for 5 minutes. A true help to all those future applicants.
that’s awesome, i did write down a list of questions that i was going to share with my friend but since i was going to see him i didn’t make it very comprehensive at all (i.e. 5 questions…) … so yeah. this should be really helpful for whoever wants to do an interview
in case it hasn’t been done yet, has someone put this blog on the resources page as well? i think it needs to be in there too…
i remember nothing but the timtam.
