Free Hugs and Down’s Syndrome

Mana • Posted by Mana on September 14th, 2007

Today was the last day before term break. This in itself is a bit of a strange realisation because the year has gone so fast, and OSCEs are upon me very very soon. :/

It also was the Florey Medical Research Fund Badge Day, and I felt happy to be volunteering - of course, a good opportunity to break out that boilersuit that DC got for me and the surgical hat that I got from the bed push photo shoot (it should have been in the Advertiser a couple of weeks back). :) The morning was rather slow in terms of collections, but the afternoon has got to be a highlight, though I collected almost nothing in the afternoon. This would mostly be due to the fact that after a while i gave one of the other volunteers my collection tin and went around with a sign saying “Free Hugs” - and today was a great day for free hugs. I don’t know exactly how many i got, but i am pretty sure it was more than 200. :)

I still have that sign here… and I think I will definitely do that again next year. I even got a mini-fan club; I was stationed at Rundle Mall and some random people even asked the other people where I was. hehehe…

Lots of hugs do release endorphins and I am currently on a bit of a high on hugs. :) And I think I also learned how to hug better. Simply reciprocating the same kind of force is effective, but if it is tight, it should also be long. It is also good to hold on until the other person starts letting go.

A couple of days back (last wednesday that is) me and birdman decided for our MPPD visit that we would make it to the Down Syndrome Institute of South Australia for an interview with some of them. Note to all people who will do another MPPD visit in the future: highly recommended. Though it took a little while to get started, it was awesome being able to connect with these people; they are really friendly and happy. again - subliminal message - highly recommended. Happiness indeed. Amazing what they get up to as well. (Due to confidentiality issues - I can’t say any more. Sorry…)

To all readers out there - I send a virtual hug. May it brighten your day.
