*anyone looking for a mechanism relating to DM –> macrovascular damage can look on Harrison… Harrison online if you don’t have it (i couldn’t find it. oh, how i feel like a failure!)
T.I.A
Amaurosis Fugae -caused by a blockage in ophthalmic artery
-temporary blindness in one eye
-patient experiences it as if ‘it were a curtain coming down’
-can present as blurred vision, partial blindness or total sudden blindness.
-pathognomonic with T.I.A
: Ischaemia of neurological tissue leading to a defect of greater than 24 hours.
exists in two MAIN types- ischaemic, and haemorrhagic.
Ischaemic (blockage) -thrombotic
-embolic (RF- atherosclerosis, AF)
Haemorrhagic -ICH (intracranial haemorrhage)
-SAH (sub-arachnoid haemorrhage- caused by ruptured aneurysms) (patient could have HEADACHE due to increase in ICP)
- hypertension (#1)
- smoking (#2)
- diabetes mellitus (#3)
- high cholestrol
- family history
- atrial fibrillation
- thromobophilia
- previous T.I.A/stroke
- migraine with aura
-CT
-MRI (these two investigations will determine which type of stroke the patient is experiencing)
Motor movement is controlled by the lateral corticospinal pathway
also, keep in mind for neuro exam:

Wasting
Tremors
Fasciculations
