18

why human society places such emphasis on this particular number is beyond me. it’s almost an arbitrary threshold. however this makes the threshold no longer arbitrary and the feeling of being 18 is different from being 17 because of thise set threshold that means that the eighteen year old can now go into a bar or club and/or have centrelink payments direct to their bank account and/or have internet access from university (so useful).

thanks to joel (yes he has commented under that display name, so i can use his name on here) for being the first person to take me out on my birthday, to the nearby north adelaide burger bar, to have an AB (you’ll know what this is if you live in adelaide. i think.) that makes my first 18th meal an AB and my first 18th drink a “fruitsations” apple, kiwi and strawberry nectar.

first to message me today was (name withheld, you know who you are because… the message involved stamps and a postal van, and as of now, i don’t have your permission to identify you). it not only woke me up but it kind of reminded me as well that today is quite a checkpointy type of day.

:) thanks also to kc for all the virtual hugs that have been sent. and yes - i promise that one day we shall meet up and we shall go out to a concert. just… :/ i don’t know when. also thanks for all the random messages that you send that always make my day brighter.

of course, i shall mention my family when they are awake. heh.

  1. Yes….. and here you hav another Happy B’day from yours truly… 18 IS a special number… talk about finally being an adult. Although ur intelligence/maturity and height MAY indicate otherwise. :P

  2. … says the person who wants to choke me to death to get my ID so that she can get drunk before she is 18…

    anyway, thanks ^_^

  3. Great! So much for not identifying people. You’ve basically given away the fact that I’m female. :( Good one TONY…. :P

  4. I don’t think i know of a guy called rei anyway…

  5. I think your gender would be assumed from your name, rei… that’s what you get from choosing a name ripped from a cartoon series you haven’t even watched!

happy birthday tony, i didn’t know it was your birthday today, actually… feel kind of bad for not saying it to your face or getting you sth. but then i tell myself all these excuses for me not doing these things, and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy again

    =/
    no seriously, happy birthday!
and you’re right, 18 is not a milestone so much as an arbitary number Australian society chooses to imprint on every person who grows up here.

also… i like AB a lot. I’ll take you out to AB next time too if you like, haha

  6. Take me out to AB too!!

Also living up until 18 is hardly a milestone… how hard is it to exist for 18 years… my pet rock could do that. If you were a dog, on the other hand, now THAT would be something =]

  7. mana, go get hammered then appreciate the true value of an AB.
unless ofcourse youre a certain human garbage disposal unit in PBL 1S :P
but try being 19 in america - a whole year of oz drinking under your belt to come to this crazy place with a drinking age of 21! twas torture i tells ya!

  8. you went to america for a year? cool tell me more

  9. hey tony,

this is a bit late seeing as how I’ve been crazy busy, I’ve only had the chance for some true procrastination today. But wish it could have been more wonderful for you, but in reality it is just an age and it is hyped up. But you know, there will be a time where you just *feel* grown up and although I’m like 19 and so totally do not feel grown up I’m sure one day I will! Besides there’s always the 21st which in my opinion was always meant to be the bigger party :P.

Oh and you’re welcome, I think I love the virtual hugs as much as you…yes I’m addicted to hugs. lol even though they’re only virtual.

Oh and yes, you’re so on, if I’m ever in adelaide (has not really happened yet in 7 years of being in australia..but who knows!) I shall make a point of saying hello. Well I’ve never been to melbourne either, and this holidays I might go there, so who knows, adelaide might be next ;).

    Anyway, hope you’re well :D.

    xxkc

  10. Hey man,

  11. Heh, the Blue & White café version of the AB is better. Back in the day knowledge of it was handed down via word of mouth only because it wasn’t listed on the menu.

  12. I agree with this comment :)

  13. Hey, don’t diss the big 1 8……

    *sigh* i wish i lived in germany…

  14. hey tony, u’ve got my permission to mention me ;)

oops. too late. no need 2 anymore…lol, birthday sms’s…

but neway, that’s beside the point. Look I’m posting! OMG OMG OMG.

    first time ;) hehehehe

You know, there rele should b a discussion board or forum. Maybe there is, and I don’t know where it is… Well then it should be more accessible. I feel like my words aren’t wanted anywhere. T_T

  15. Well… you’ve missed out on the more interesting discussions methinks.

I guess a discussion board is not such a bad idea but the only problem with that is that this is not hosted on my own server - it’s hosted by the medstudentsonline admin, isuru. and… yeah medstudentsonline is already a discussion board… so… uh… yeah hmmm…

    your words are always wanted!
